Welcome back to waiter training .

For todays waiter training we are going to focus on first impressions and why they are so important to your income.

The guests first impression of you and your restaurant begins before they even enter the door. It starts in the parking lot.

If you have a littered and debris strewn parking lot and the guest has to step over and around this, they tend to get upset. If you notice this in your lot, let the management know so they or maintenance can clean up the lot. Hey why not get a little exercise and pick some up before you enter the restaurant. You could say you're doing a little waiter training (Weight training)

The next impression that the guest will have of you and restaurant is when they enter the door. Were they greeted by a manager or hostess with a big friendly welcome? Or were they left standing at the front wondering what to do next.(kind of feels like that when you are going through waiter training doesn't it?)

Don't be afraid to greet the guest if there is no one there to greet them. While your at why don't you seat them in your station? (Part of basic waiter training is learning how to greet and seat.)

Speaking of your station, did you clean and inspect your tables prior to seating the guest? Make sure the table top or table clothe is clean. No sticky residue or stains. Are all the condiments on the table full and presentable? There is nothing worse than sitting at a dirty table. Guests will leave a much smaller tip based on this alone. Now it is all up to you.

Did you greet the guest with a big friendly smile and a friendly greeting. For example: “Good evening folks, welcome to ____, how are you on this beautiful evening?” Or if you recognize them you may say “Welcome back to____, it is so nice to see you again.” Be sure to greet them with sincerity and warmth. Smiling the whole time.

Your guests are now going to take you in. Is your uniform clean and pressed. Hair and nails neatly groomed. (if you wear perfume or cologne, use just a touch) Does your posture and body language suggest that you are ready and willing to help them.

Be sure to answer all of your guests questions concerning the menu and or specials. Please don't tell them you have to go ask the chef or look at the menu. A Professional Restaurant Waiter will be aware of how all specials and menu items are prepared.

By now your guest will have made a first impression of you. If it is a favorable one, your tip will increase. Set a great first impression with your guests and your shift will go smoothly!

Keep in mind that the more waiter training you do, the better your tips will be.
